Know More About Engine Oil

Engine oil is said to be the engine’s lifeline and for the same reason it becomes imperative that quality engine oil is used. A spree of advertizements on TV and radio has created awareness among people about how important is a good quality engine oil.

So, what is the function of engine oil? Engine oil basically performs the task of a lubricant which prevents wear and tear of the engine and oxidation. It also cools, cleans, seals and slows down the corrosion of engine parts. These functions have been explained below:

  • Engine oil as a lubricant: It acts as a protective coating to prevent metal-to-metal contact. But the oil must have enough viscosity to ensure easy ignition and start. The oil should quickly circulate through the engine. Still it must remain thick enough to provide sufficient lubrication.
  • Engine oil as a coolant: It is said that oil carries off almost 40% of the total heat generated in the car engine. At the time when the engine gets heated up, the oil carries the heat away from the moving parts.
  • Engine oil as a sealer: The oil coats the cylinder walls and fills in the tiny pores which allow compression to blow past the rings. It also prevents oil leaks and maintains oil pressure.
  • Engine oil as a cleanser: It gathers and suspends dirt and various contaminants. The oil must also be able to stand the moisture and gasoline accumulated without forming sludge.
  • Engine oil as corrosion inhibiter: It coats the interior of engine parts to prevent them from getting rusted. It also deactivates the acids formed by combustion blow-by and oil oxidation at high temperatures.

However, the quality of engine oil is judged by its viscosity. Viscosity is basically the flowing ability of the oil.  When oil has very low viscosity, it can be shear and loose strength at high temperatures. And when oil has too high viscosity, it may not pump to all the parts at low temperatures. However, it is obvious that as oils heat up, they usually get thinner.
